Amy Lightner, MD - Pioneering Advances in Colorectal Disease Care

A colorectal surgeon based in Del Mar, California, Amy Lightner, MD, has dedicated her career to improving outcomes for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. An innovator in the medical field, Amy Lightner, MD, has conducted dozens of studies on regenerative medicine therapies such as mesenchymal stem cells for treating Crohn’s disease. Her work has advanced the discovery of new drugs for complex bowel disease, expanding treatment options and improving the quality of life for patients.

Currently based at Scripps Clinic in San Diego, Amy Lightner, MD, treats patients and also leads research efforts on discovering therapies for bowel disease as a professor at Scripps Research Institute. Her work spans early-phase discovery through late-stage clinical trials. She also oversees staff scientists, research assistants, and postdoctoral fellows in executing translational science.

Before, Amy Lightner, MD, held leadership roles at Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, where she founded the Center for Regenerative Medicine and Surgery. She also served as a consulting chief medical officer for Boomerang Medical. Amy Lightner, MD, has published hundreds of peer-reviewed papers in respected journals, written chapters in dozens of medical books, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, and Crohn’s and Colitis 360.

Beyond the lab and operating room, Amy Lightner, MD, is a dedicated educator, guidelines author, and international speaker worldwide. She earned her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, trained at UCLA, and holds an executive MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.
